Treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) in Youth

Body dysmophic disorder is a psychological disorder characterised by a preoccupation with a perceived or slight defect in physical appearance. Little is known about this debilitating condition, which typically starts in late childhood/early adolescence, and is associated with high rates of suicide and depression. Despite the high distress BDD patients suffer, clinicians will report that they rarely treat BDD in their clinical practice. This workshop aims to improve clinician’s skills in identifying and assessing BDD in young people. Moreover, the workshop will review the evidence-base of treatment for BDD in youth and will provide step-by-step instruction in cognitive behavioural procedures used to treat this debilitating disorder. Various instructional technologies will be employed including didactic instructions, videotaped samples of treatment, and role-play demonstrations.

Workshop Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Identify BDD and understand key phenomenological features
• Use evidence base tools to assess for BDD in clinical practice
• Identify the core elements of CBT for BDD
