Intensive Treatment of Specific Phobia in Youth

Specific phobias are the most common anxiety disorder in children and adolescents, affecting between 5 to 10% of youth in community samples and 15% in mental health settings. If untreated, childhood phobias tend to persist and are associated with the development of adult anxiety, depression, and substance use problems. This workshop will begin with a brief overview of the diagnostic criteria for specific phobia and the etiology of the disorder. The remainder of the workshop will focus on the implementation of an intensive treatment (called a One Session Treatment) for phobic youth, from assessment through to its completion. The workshop will involve didactic presentation, videotaped samples of treatment sessions, opportunities to practice skills, and case-based discussion.

Workshop Outcomes
• Assess and accurately diagnose specific phobia in children and adolescents
• Develop knowledge and skills to successfully deliver an intensive treatment for phobic youth
