Using the Therapeutic Relationship to Improve Social Functioning

Workshop Date
Friday 19 October 2018, 9:00am to 4:00pm (registration from 8:30am)

Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) is based on behavioural analysis and as such employs a variety of techniques to differentially reinforce effective behaviours and reduce ineffective behaviour, particularly in interpersonal situations. FAP aims to promote awareness, courage, and compassion to deepen the therapeutic relationship. The therapeutic relationship is then used to ameliorate interpersonal deficits that contribute to a wide-range of psychiatric problems. Importantly, FAP is not a stand-alone treatment, but a tool for effectively delivering evidence-based approaches.

This workshop will introduce and review the research for FAP and then train participants in the delivery of FAP. During the workshop, Dr Wetterneck will use case examples, role-playing, and experiential exercises to demonstrate how to conduct FAP techniques during a treatment session. He will specifically show attendees how to use the therapeutic relationship to socially reinforce desirable behaviours to improve treatment outcomes when using evidence-based therapies for conditions with social functioning problems, such as CBT for depression. This is in line with the current status of the research for FAP.

Workshop Outcomes
At the end of the talk, attendees will be able to:
1. Recognise interpersonal targets that can be addressed through in-session work
2. Learn to apply the Five Rules of FAP to promote interpersonal change
3. Improve your ability to take strategic risks and act with courage in the therapy relationship and other relationships
4. Integrate FAP principles with evidence-based therapies
